The single biggest danger for a motorcyclist is not being seen. Drivers who collide with motorcycles often say they never saw the bike. Never assume another driver sees you.
Looking ahead and around
- Look as far ahead as you can see, beyond the vehicle in front, so you spot vehicles stopping or turning early.
- Check your mirrors every five to seven seconds to track traffic behind.
- Mirrors do not show the blind spot beside you. Always turn your head and check over your shoulder before turning or changing lanes.
Intersections
Most collisions involving motorcycles happen at intersections. Approach them slowly, keep as far as possible from other vehicles, and try to make eye contact with drivers who might pull out so you know they have seen you.
