A heavy truck rewards a smooth, deliberate driver and punishes a rushed one. Before moving, the driver should be settled and the vehicle ready.

• Adjust the seat and mirrors so you can reach all controls comfortably and see down both sides of the vehicle.
• Fasten the seat belt, required by law, every trip.
• Build full air pressure before moving an air-brake vehicle, and wait for the low-air warning to clear.
• Release the parking (spring) brakes only once you are ready to drive.
• Pull away gently: a heavy load shifts if the truck lurches.
