To apply for a Class A or D licence you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Already hold a valid Ontario Class G licence (full G, not G1 or G2), or an equivalent licence from another Canadian jurisdiction.
- Meet the medical and vision standards for a commercial driver. A completed medical examination report must be submitted, and a commercial driver must renew that medical assessment periodically as they age.
- Pass a vision screening.
A Class A or D driver's licence is a higher-responsibility licence, so the medical and record standards are stricter than for an ordinary Class G driver.
