Endorsements (OPCFs, Ontario Policy Change Forms) are the only sanctioned way to modify OAP 1. Memorize the headline endorsements; the exam tests by number.
- OPCF 5, Permission to Rent or Lease. Extends the policy to a vehicle the insured rents or leases for a period typically over 30 days (short rentals are covered by a different mechanism, often the rental company's own coverage or an OPCF 27).
- OPCF 20, Coverage for Transportation Replacement ("rental car while yours is being repaired"). Pays the cost of a substitute vehicle for a covered Section 6 loss, subject to daily and aggregate limits.
- OPCF 27, Liability for Damage to Non-Owned Automobiles. Extends the insured's Section 6 / liability coverages to vehicles the insured rents short-term or borrows. The 27B variant adds "care, custody, or control" coverage for damage to the rented vehicle while in the insured's care.
- OPCF 28A, Excluded Driver Endorsement. Names a specific driver who is excluded from all OAP 1 coverages. Useful to keep an uninsurable household driver off the rated risk; the excluded driver has zero coverage if they drive the listed vehicle.
- OPCF 43, Waiver of Depreciation. Eliminates the depreciation deduction on a total loss for a new vehicle, paying out the original purchase price (or MSRP, per the wording) instead of actual cash value during the initial period after purchase.
- OPCF 44R, Family Protection Coverage. Already covered above tops up under-insured at-fault driver liability to the insured's Section 2 limit. Often called the most important optional endorsement on the policy.
Each OPCF modifies OAP 1 by reference; the contract is OAP 1 plus the declarations plus any attached endorsements. A change to coverage that is not effected by an OPCF (e.g., a hand-written marginal note) is generally ineffective.
Common mistake: confusing OPCF 27 (driving someone else's car) with OPCF 5 (long-term lease) and OPCF 20 (rental while yours is repaired). The three endorsements address three different scenarios and are frequently tested together.
⚠️ Trap: OPCF 28A (excluded driver) excludes the named driver from all OAP 1 coverages. If the excluded driver causes a serious at-fault collision while driving the listed vehicle, the insured's own liability coverage will not respond, the family is exposed personally. Document the recommendation and any client signature selecting the endorsement.
Recall: Match each OPCF to its purpose: 5, 20, 27, 28A, 43, 44R. Which endorsement waives depreciation on a total loss?
