Weather changes how the road behaves. The common thread in every poor condition is the same: slow down to buy time and stopping distance.
- Rain. A road is often most slippery just after rain begins, when water mixes with built-up oil and dust before the rain washes it away.
- Standing water. Slow down before a puddle, deep water reduces traction and can hide potholes or debris.
- Wind. In strong gusts, slow down, grip the handlebars firmly, and be ready to correct your position in the lane as the wind pushes the bike.
- Fog and low light. Reduce speed and increase following distance so you have more time to react to what appears out of the murk.
