A motorcycle offers no metal cage, no airbags, and no seat belt. Your gear is your protection, so it matters every single ride.
Helmets
Ontario law requires both the rider and any passenger to wear an approved helmet with the chin strap securely fastened every time they ride. An approved helmet must be in good condition with a sturdy strap and fastener.
A helmet must fit snugly without sliding around. A loose helmet can come off during a collision, exactly when you need it most. A full-faced helmet gives the most protection because it covers the whole head and face.
Clothing
Wear a jacket and pants that fully cover your arms and legs, even in warm weather. Leather offers the best protection; a synthetic riding suit is a good alternative. Garments should fit snugly without restricting movement. Back protectors, kidney belts, and body armour inserts add further protection.
- Boots: sturdy and high enough to cover the ankle, with hard soles that grip. A low heel is best so it does not catch on surfaces.
- Gloves: gauntlet-style leather gloves that extend over the wrist protect the fingers, knuckles, and wrists and help keep a firm grip on the controls.
Being seen
You cannot assume other drivers see you. Help them by wearing bright colours, yellow, orange, and red are highly visible. For low light, add a reflective vest and reflective tape to your helmet, clothing, and motorcycle.
